Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how Smart City Signals ("Smart City Signals", "we", "us") collects, uses and protects information about the people who use the Smart City Signals traffic-signal monitoring platform, including the web portal at user.smartcitysignals.com and the email and text message (SMS) alerts it sends (together, the "Service").
The Service is provided to public agencies, such as cities and counties, under a contract with Smart City Signals. Accounts are created only for the agency's staff and its authorized contractors, such as traffic engineers, supervisors and signal technicians. The Service is not offered to the general public.
Information we collect
- Account information: your name, work email address, login name, password (stored only in encrypted form), the agency you work for and your role.
- Mobile phone number and SMS preference: collected only if you choose to receive alerts by text message, together with a record of your consent.
- Alert preferences: which alert types and which signals you have chosen to be notified about.
- Usage and security information: sign-in times, the IP address of your session, the pages and actions you use, and a log of the alerts sent to you (time, alert type and delivery channel).
- Traffic equipment data: status and performance data from the traffic signals and roadside devices that your agency connects to the Service. This is data about equipment, not about you.
How we use information
- To provide the Service: sign you in, show you your agency's signals and run the features your agency has bought.
- To send the email and SMS alerts you have chosen to receive, such as cabinet faults, battery backup events, signals in flash and stuck detectors.
- To send service messages about your account, such as password resets.
- To keep the Service secure, investigate problems and improve how it works.
- To meet our contract with your agency and our legal obligations.
We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not send marketing messages by SMS.
SMS opt-in data
We do not sell or share your SMS opt-in data or personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.
Your mobile number and your SMS consent are used only to send you the Smart City Signals alerts you asked for. Text message originator opt-in data and consent are not shared with any third party, except with the SMS delivery provider that sends the messages on our behalf, and only for that purpose.
How we share information
We do not sell, rent or trade personal information. We share it only:
- With your agency: your agency's administrators can see and manage the accounts of their own staff.
- With service providers who host the Service or deliver its email and SMS messages for us. They may use the information only to provide those services to us.
- When the law requires it, or to protect the safety and security of people, equipment or the Service.
How long we keep information
We keep account information for as long as your account is active and as your agency's contract requires. Alert and usage logs are kept for a limited time and then deleted. When your agency closes your account, we delete or anonymize your personal information unless the law or the agency's contract requires us to keep it longer.
How we protect information
The Service is served over encrypted HTTPS connections, passwords are stored in encrypted form, and access to the Service and its data is limited to authorized people. No system is completely secure, but we work to protect your information from unauthorized access, change or loss.
Your choices
- Stop text messages at any time by replying STOP to any Smart City Signals text, or by asking your agency administrator to turn off SMS alerts for your account. Reply HELP for help. See the SMS Terms in our Terms & Conditions.
- Change or remove your phone number and alert preferences through your agency administrator or by contacting us.
- Ask for a copy or deletion of your personal information by contacting us. Because your account belongs to your agency, we may need to confirm the request with the agency.
Cookies
The Service uses a cookie to keep you signed in. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.
Children
The Service is for agency staff only and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy. When we do, we will change the effective date at the top of this page.
